Common questions
Does the person I send a document to need to install anything?
No. A document opens in any current browser by double-clicking. The app is only needed to make documents, not to open them.
Why will part of my page not work inside a document?
Anything that needs a live server cannot run inside a sealed file. That includes logins, databases, and payment forms. The app flags external references (a remote script or font) so you can bundle them locally before you pack.
What does it mean when the viewer says the seal does not match?
The file was changed after it was sealed. Ask the sender for a fresh copy. This check is how you tell whether a document was altered after the author sealed it.
I lost the password to an encrypted document. Can it be recovered?
No. The password is never stored in the file, so the contents cannot be recovered without it. Keep a copy of important passwords somewhere safe.
Does a signature prove who made a document?
A signature proves the file has not changed since it was signed, and shows which key signed it. It does not prove a person's identity: the name on a key is set by whoever made the key. Treat the key, not the label, as the identifier.
What is free and what needs Plus?
Making, opening, reading, checking signatures, commenting, and the AI connection are free. Plus adds converting a document back to a project folder, saving any URL, password encryption, annotations, presentation mode, and adding signature boxes.
Install and update
Get the app
Download from the download page. Builds are available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The app packs and manages documents; you do not need it to open a document someone sends you.
Requirements
- macOS 12 or newer, Windows 10 or newer, or a current Linux distribution.
- Any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari) to open a document.
Updates
The app checks for updates on launch and installs them when you confirm. Documents you already made do not change when the app updates; each seal is fixed at the moment you packed it.
Make and open documents
Make a document
Point the app at a folder containing a static web project (an index.html and its assets); it packs the folder into one .swd.html. You can also save a live web page directly to a document.
What fits
- HTML, CSS, and JavaScript that runs in the browser.
- Images, video, audio, and fonts, stored inside the file.
- Interactive charts, calculators, 3D scenes, and forms that compute locally.
Anything needing a live server (logins, databases, payment forms) will not run inside the seal.
Open a document
Double-click the .swd.html file. It opens in your default browser and runs offline. Nothing is sent anywhere and no account is asked for. If a document was changed after sealing, the viewer shows the seal no longer matches.
Signatures and encryption
Signatures
A signature is added with a signing key you hold on your own machine. It proves the file has not changed since signing and shows which key signed it. It does not prove a person's identity. Share the public half of your key with people who need to check your signatures; keep the private half to yourself. Adding signature boxes and requesting signatures is a Plus feature; checking an existing signature is free.
Passwords and encryption
You can lock a document with a password when you pack it (a Plus feature). It is encrypted with AES-256 and cannot be opened or unpacked without the password, which is never stored in the file. The protection is only as strong as the password, so use a long, unique one for anything sensitive. If you lose the password, the contents cannot be recovered.
Convert and edit
Plus can convert a document back into its original project folder for editing, add comments and annotations, and run a document in presentation mode with presenter notes.
AI and MCP
Connect an AI assistant through a local MCP server, then ask it in plain language to make, read, verify, or sign documents. The server runs on your own machine, uses no cloud and no sign-in, and touches only the file paths you allow.
Setup instructions for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, and other clients, plus the full tool list and its limits, are on the MCP setup page.
Plans and billing
Prices
Plus pricing depends on the term you choose, billed once per period: $9.99 per month monthly, $4.99 per month on a 1-year term ($59.88 a year), $3.99 per month on a 2-year term ($95.76), or $3.49 per month on a 3-year term ($125.64, the best rate). Prices are in USD; tax may apply depending on where you are.
Payment
Payments are handled by Stripe. Card details are held by Stripe, not by us. Change your card, update billing details, and download invoices from the billing section of your account, which opens the Stripe customer portal.
Cancelling and refunds
Cancel any time from your account. Plus stays active until the end of the period you already paid for, then the account returns to Free. Cancelling does not delete documents you have made. For a problem with a charge, email hello@swdeditor.com; refunds follow the Terms.
Account and privacy
Sign-in
You only need an account to buy or manage Plus. Sign in with Google or an email sign-in link; there is no password to set. An email link works once and expires. After signing in, the app keeps working offline for up to seven days before it needs the network to confirm the subscription is active.
Your data
Documents are made and opened on your own devices; we do not receive their contents. The account system stores only your email, sign-in identity, and billing record. You can view, export, or delete this from the Data and privacy section of your account. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
Troubleshooting
- A document will not open. Confirm the file keeps its full .swd.html name and open it in a current browser. Some chat apps rename or compress attachments; download the original rather than a preview.
- The seal does not match. The file was changed after sealing. Ask the sender for a fresh copy.
- Something in the page does not work. Features needing a server (a login, a live database, a payment form) cannot run in a sealed document.
- An encrypted document will not open. Check the password. There is no way to recover the contents without it.
- The sign-in link did not arrive. Check spam, confirm the address, and request a new link. Each link expires and works once.
- Plus tools are greyed out. Confirm you are signed in to the account holding the subscription, and that the app has been online in the last seven days.
